Subscription commerce software

Custom Subscription Commerce Software for Recurring Brands

Join.To.IT builds subscription commerce software for brands that live on plans, prepaid terms, pauses, skips, dunning, and replenishment. This is not a one-time checkout rebuild and not a marketplace of third-party sellers.

Subscription software solutions we build

Recurring logic first, storefront second

Subscription brands fail in billing and exception handling, not in the first add-to-cart. Members pause, skip, swap, prepay, fail a card, and expect the next box or refill to respect those choices. A standard checkout plus a generic subscription app usually models one of those well and turns the rest into support tickets.

We build the subscription system of record: plans, prepaid credits, skip windows, dunning, and replenishment or box production. The storefront can stay on a hosted platform. The custom work is the membership lifecycle you cannot fake with a recurring SKU.

Systems for plans, boxes, and replenishment

Start with billing exceptions and skip logic — where subscription teams lose members — then connect production and the member portal.

01

Plans, cadences, and pricing

Plan catalogue that can express monthly, multi-month, and trial rules without hiding them in one-off discount codes.

  • Plan and cadence definitions
  • Trial and intro pricing
  • Plan upgrades and downgrades
  • Tax treatment by plan
  • Grandfathered price handling
02

Prepaid terms and credits

Prepaid subscriptions and gift terms that decrement correctly when a member skips or the warehouse misses a cycle.

  • Prepaid month or box banks
  • Gift subscription redemption
  • Credit adjustments with audit
  • Expiry and unused-term rules
  • Finance-ready prepaid reports
03

Pause, skip, and swap logic

Member choices with cutoffs that production and billing both respect, so a skip is not a surprise shipment.

  • Skip windows and cutoffs
  • Pause with resume dates
  • Product swap and frequency change
  • Holiday and delay calendars
  • Ops visibility before lock
04

Dunning and payment recovery

Retry sequences, member messaging, and access rules when a card fails — without immediately cancelling a loyal subscriber.

  • Retry schedules you control
  • Card-update links and portals
  • Grace periods and access states
  • Cancel versus recover outcomes
  • Dunning performance reporting
05

Boxes, replenishment, and production

What actually ships: curated boxes, refill reminders, or both, tied to inventory and the member’s current selections.

  • Box curation and cohort locks
  • Replenishment forecasts
  • Component and allergen constraints
  • Warehouse and 3PL handoff
  • Missed-shipment make-goods
06

Member portal and lifecycle

Self-service for the actions support currently does: skip, pause, swap, update payment, and see what is coming next.

  • Upcoming shipment preview
  • Skip, pause, and swap self-serve
  • Payment method updates
  • Cancellation save offers you define
  • Support view of full lifecycle
AI for subscription operations

Predict churn work and draft member messages from real states

Subscription data is sequential: skips, failed payments, swaps, and tickets. AI helps ops see who needs a human, and helps support answer from the member’s actual plan state — not a generic FAQ.

Our Join.To.IT AI development team connects these capabilities to your plan, billing, and shipment history.

At-risk member summaries

Highlight skip streaks, dunning, and ticket volume so retention staff work a queue instead of a raw export.

Lifecycle message drafts

Draft skip reminders, card-update, and resume messages from the member’s plan, still edited by your team.

Support answers from plan state

Answer “when does my box ship” and “why was I charged” from billing events, with escalation when the state is messy.

Curation and swap suggestions

Suggest box items or refill SKUs from past selections and constraints, approved by merchandisers.

Dunning copy variants

Generate retry-email variants from your tone of voice, never sending until you approve the sequence.

Subscription integrations

Connect billing, payments, warehouse, and the store you keep

We integrate payment providers, tax, warehouse and 3PL platforms, email and SMS, and the commerce platform you already use for the first checkout.

Hosted storefronts and Shopify can remain the acquisition layer. Custom software owns the subscription ledger. We do not pitch a full checkout rewrite unless checkout itself cannot enrol a member into the plan model.

Why custom software

When a recurring SKU is not a subscription business

Generic subscription apps handle a simple monthly charge. Custom software is warranted when prepaid, skips, boxes, and dunning are how you retain members — and the app treats them as edge cases.

Skip logic is operational

A skip that misses the production cutoff becomes a wrong shipment and a ticket. That rule belongs in software.

Prepaid is a liability

Credits, gifts, and unused terms need an audit trail finance can explain, not a discount code.

Dunning is retention

Immediate cancel on a failed card burns members you could recover with a controlled retry path.

Boxes are not checkout

Curation, cohorts, and component constraints are a production system sitting next to commerce.

Do not rebuild cart first

If acquisition checkout works, leave it. Build the membership lifecycle the storefront cannot express.

Our development process

From membership rules to a working subscription system

The same Join.To.IT delivery process, applied to plans, prepaid, skip windows, dunning, and replenishment.

01

Business analysis

Document every plan, cutoff, pause, skip, prepaid, and failed-payment path, including what support does by hand today.

02

Solution design

Define the subscription ledger, integrations to payments and warehouse, and what stays on the existing storefront.

03

UI/UX design

Design member portal and ops consoles so cutoffs and dunning states are visible before a cycle locks.

04

Development

Build plan enrolment and skip or pause first, then prepaid, dunning, and production handoff in billing-cycle releases.

05

Quality assurance

Test cycle lock, retries, credit decrement, and “ship versus hold” using a full cohort, not a single happy-path order.

06

Launch & support

Launch on one plan or region, then migrate remaining members and retire the workarounds that created double charges.

FAQ

Subscription commerce software questions

Practical answers for subscription founders, retention leads, and operations managers.

How much does subscription commerce software cost?
Cost follows plan complexity, prepaid, and whether we replace a billing app or sit beside it. Skip, pause, and dunning on one cadence is a contained slice. Multi-plan prepaid plus box production is larger. We map cycles and exceptions first, then price a defined ledger — not a generic new checkout.
Is this a rebuild of our storefront checkout?
Usually no. If people can already buy, we keep that path and build plans, skips, prepaid, and dunning behind it. We only rebuild checkout when it cannot enrol someone into your plan model. This page is the membership system, not a theme project.
Can you support boxes and replenishment in one product?
Yes. Some brands ship a curated box, others refill a consumable, and some do both. We model upcoming shipments, component constraints, and make-goods so warehouse and billing share the same member state. Curation stays a merchandising decision; software enforces the lock.
How does dunning work in what you build?
You define retry days, grace access, and when a member is cancelled versus recovered. We integrate the payment provider for retries and card-update links, and we show ops the open dunning queue. We do not promise a recovery rate; the sequence is yours to approve and change.
Will this work if we stay on Shopify or another platform?
Often yes. Many teams keep hosted checkout for acquisition and run custom subscription logic next to it. If you need Shopify apps or Hydrogen specifically, see the Shopify businesses page. If you need a brand journey without a membership ledger, see DTC brands.
How do pauses and skips avoid wrong shipments?
Every action has a cutoff tied to the production calendar. After lock, the portal explains what can still change. Ops sees skips and pauses before pick. That is the difference between a subscription system and a recurring charge that always ships.
