Shopify custom development

Shopify Custom Development, Apps, and Integrations

Join.To.IT builds on Shopify for merchants who intend to stay there. We write apps, Hydrogen or custom storefronts, checkout extensions, and ERP or OMS connections — we do not treat ripping out Shopify as the default recommendation.

Shopify software solutions we build

Stay on Shopify. Build the pieces the app store cannot.

Shopify is often the right merchant platform: checkout, payments, and a huge app ecosystem. The strain shows up when you need a private app, a Hydrogen storefront, checkout behaviour the theme editor cannot express, or a reliable two-way link to ERP and OMS.

We treat Shopify as the system of commerce you keep. Custom development fills gaps with apps, extensions, and integrations, and we only discuss a platform move when the constraint is Shopify itself — not a missing connector someone tried to paper over with five conflicting apps.

Apps, storefronts, and connections around Shopify

Start with the sync or checkout gap creating manual work, then add storefront or app work that merchandisers can actually run.

01

Custom Shopify apps

Private or custom apps for merchandising rules, wholesale flags, or internal workflows the public app store does not cover cleanly.

  • Admin UI extensions
  • Background jobs and webhooks
  • Metafield and metaobject models
  • Role-aware staff tools
  • App performance and logging
02

Checkout and Shopify Plus extensions

Checkout customisation within Shopify’s model: extensions, plus features, and thank-you or order-status work that stays supported.

  • Checkout UI extensions
  • Shopify Functions where they fit
  • Thank-you and order status
  • Validation and field rules
  • Plus-oriented workflows
03

Hydrogen and custom storefronts

Headless storefronts that still check out through Shopify, for brands that need a front end the Online Store theme cannot deliver.

  • Hydrogen and Oxygen builds
  • Storefront API integration
  • Custom collection and PDP logic
  • Caching and performance work
  • Preview and content workflows
04

ERP and OMS connections

Two-way sync for orders, fulfilments, customers, and stock so Shopify is not a second set of books.

  • Order and fulfilment push
  • Inventory and location mapping
  • Customer and B2B company sync
  • Idempotent webhook handling
  • Mismatch queues for ops
05

Data, feeds, and middleware

A controlled layer between Shopify and the rest of the stack when you have PIM, DAM, or multiple sales channels.

  • PIM and DAM connectors
  • Channel and marketplace feeds
  • Scheduled exports and imports
  • Event logs and replay
  • Staging versus live catalogues
06

Theme and merchandiser tooling

Theme work and merchandising helpers when the Online Store remains the storefront — not a redesign agency pitch for its own sake.

  • Theme sections for campaigns
  • Metafield-driven merchandising
  • Performance and Core Web Vitals
  • Staff training on what we ship
  • Guardrails so apps do not conflict
AI for Shopify operators

Use Shopify data without turning the store into a chatbot gimmick

Shopify already holds orders, catalogue, and customer records. AI helps merchandisers draft, support deflect, and ops spot sync failures — grounded in Admin and Storefront data you already have.

Our Join.To.IT AI development team connects these capabilities to your Shopify catalogue, orders, and connected ERP or OMS data.

Metafield and description drafts

Draft product content and metafields from existing attributes, queued for merchandiser approval in Admin.

Support answers from order data

Answer shipping and return questions from Shopify order status and your policies, with handoff to staff.

Sync anomaly summaries

Explain OMS or ERP mismatches in plain language so ops can fix mapping instead of re-running blind jobs.

Collection merchandising assist

Suggest collection order or missing tags from sales and stock, still published by your team.

App job failure triage

Group webhook and job errors so developers see the pattern instead of a raw log dump.

Shopify integrations

Connect Shopify to ERP, OMS, PIM, and fulfilment

We work with Shopify Admin, Storefront, and webhook APIs, plus ERP and OMS systems, warehouse and 3PL platforms, PIM, tax, and the marketing tools already installed on the store.

The goal is fewer overlapping public apps and a sync path you can replay when a job fails. We do not claim partnership badges we do not have.

Why custom on Shopify

When apps and native features are not enough — and Shopify still is

Custom Shopify development is for merchants who like the platform and have hit a specific wall: checkout rules, a storefront the theme cannot do, or systems of record that will not stay in sync through another public app.

Keep checkout you already trust

Shopify checkout and payments are often the reason to stay. We extend them instead of replacing them by default.

Private apps beat plugin piles

One custom app with clear jobs is easier to operate than five public apps that fight over metafields.

ERP truth has to match Admin

Stock and fulfilment errors cost more than a Hydrogen rebuild. Sync is usually the first custom work that pays off.

Hydrogen is optional, not mandatory

We recommend a custom storefront when the Online Store cannot express the journey — not because headless is fashionable.

Migration is a last resort

If Shopify still fits the merchant model, we build on it. A replatform conversation starts only when the constraint is the platform.

Our development process

From Shopify admin pain to a supported custom layer

The same Join.To.IT delivery process, applied to apps, extensions, Hydrogen, and ERP or OMS sync.

01

Business analysis

Audit the live store: apps in conflict, webhook failures, checkout limits, and which system is actually the source of truth for stock.

02

Solution design

Decide app versus extension versus Hydrogen versus middleware, and document Shopify API scopes and ERP field mapping.

03

UI/UX design

Design Admin, checkout, and storefront surfaces so merchandisers keep working in Shopify wherever we can leave them there.

04

Development

Build the highest-risk sync or checkout slice first, then storefront or merchandising work that depends on clean data.

05

Quality assurance

Test webhooks, idempotency, checkout extensions, and peak catalogue traffic against a Shopify plus staging store when you have one.

06

Launch & support

Launch behind a feature flag or staff-only app install, then monitor job queues and retire redundant public apps.

FAQ

Shopify custom development questions

Practical answers for Shopify merchants, e-commerce managers, and IT leads who want to stay on the platform.

Will you recommend leaving Shopify?
Not as the default. This page is for merchants who want to stay. We build apps, Hydrogen or custom storefronts, and ERP or OMS connections on Shopify. A replatform discussion only starts if checkout, catalogue, or compliance limits on Shopify are the actual blocker — not a missing integration.
Do you build Shopify apps?
Yes. Private and custom apps are the usual path for internal merchandising, wholesale flags, and jobs that should not live in a public app. Public App Store listing is a different product and compliance process; we discuss it only when you actually need to sell the app.
Can you build a Hydrogen storefront?
Yes, when the Online Store theme cannot deliver the journey and you still want Shopify checkout. Hydrogen is not required for every merchant. Many stores are better served by theme work, metafields, and a custom app than by a headless rebuild.
How do Shopify ERP and OMS integrations work?
We map locations, SKUs, and fulfilment states, then move orders, stock, and customers through APIs and webhooks with retries and a mismatch queue. Ops should see failures, not silent drift. Where the ERP has no API, we use validated file drops on a schedule.
Is this the same as your DTC brands page?
No. The DTC page is about brand-owned journeys, kits, and post-purchase as a commerce system, with Shopify optional. This page assumes Shopify is the core and the work is apps, Hydrogen, checkout extensions, and system connections. Choose based on where you intend to live.
How much does Shopify custom development cost?
A focused custom app or a single ERP order sync is a contained project. Hydrogen plus checkout extensions plus OMS is larger. We inventory apps, APIs, and failure modes first, then price a defined slice. We do not charge per public-app install you already pay for.
