Custom Marketplace Development for Multi-Seller Platforms

Join.To.IT builds marketplace software for operators who sit between many sellers and many buyers. The work is onboarding, listing control, commissions, split payouts, and trust and safety — not a single-brand catalogue with a checkout theme.

Marketplace software solutions we build

A platform for many sellers, not one brand store

A marketplace is a three-sided operation. You need seller applications that can be approved or rejected, listings that can be taken down, money that splits across parties, and a way to handle fraud and disputes without the office living in spreadsheets.

Hosted storefronts are built for a merchant who owns the catalogue. We build the operator layer: who may sell, what they may list, how fees are calculated, when funds release, and how buyers and sellers escalate a problem.

Systems for marketplace operators

Start with onboarding and payouts — the two places multi-seller platforms leak trust — then extend into moderation and disputes.

01

Seller onboarding and accounts

Application, verification, and account states so new sellers do not appear on the marketplace until they meet your rules.

  • Application and document collection
  • Verification and approval queues
  • Seller profiles and storefronts
  • Category and territory permissions
  • Suspension and reinstatement flows
02

Listings and catalogue control

Seller-submitted products with operator rules for categories, required attributes, and what goes live.

  • Seller listing submission
  • Required attributes by category
  • Duplicate and policy checks
  • Bulk import and feed handling
  • Take-down and appeal workflows
03

Commission and fee engine

Fee logic that can vary by category, seller tier, promotion, or fulfilment method — not a single percentage on every order.

  • Category and tier commission rates
  • Promotional fee waivers
  • Subscription or listing fees
  • Refund and chargeback adjustments
  • Seller statement generation
04

Split payouts and settlement

Order money allocated to sellers, the marketplace, and any other party, with holds until delivery or dispute windows close.

  • Split payment routing
  • Delivery and hold schedules
  • Payout calendars and thresholds
  • Failed payout retries
  • Reconciliation reports by seller
05

Trust and safety operations

Tools for the team that reviews sellers, listings, and orders when something looks wrong.

  • Risk flags on sellers and orders
  • Moderation queues and assignments
  • Evidence capture and notes
  • Policy templates and outcomes
  • Repeat-offender tracking
06

Disputes, ratings, and messaging

A structured path for buyers and sellers to raise issues, exchange evidence, and receive a decision.

  • Dispute cases with deadlines
  • In-platform messaging with audit
  • Ratings and review moderation
  • Partial refunds and returns
  • Operator decision records
AI for marketplace operations

Help moderators catch problems before they scale

Marketplaces generate more listings and messages than a small ops team can read. AI is useful on intake, policy checks, and first-pass dispute summaries — with a human still making the call that affects a seller’s livelihood.

Our Join.To.IT AI development team connects these capabilities to your seller records, listings, and dispute history.

Listing policy screening

Flag prohibited categories, missing attributes, and copy that looks copy-pasted from another seller before it goes live.

Seller risk scoring support

Surface unusual return rates, payout failures, or sudden catalogue spikes for the trust team to review.

Dispute case summaries

Turn message threads and order events into a short brief so operators decide faster without missing context.

Buyer and seller support drafts

Draft answers from your marketplace policies and order status, then hand off when the case is not standard.

Duplicate listing detection

Find near-duplicate SKUs across sellers so the catalogue stays searchable instead of flooded.

Marketplace integrations

Connect payouts, identity checks, and fulfilment partners

We integrate payment providers that support marketplace splits, identity and document checks where you require them, tax calculation, carriers or 3PLs when the marketplace owns fulfilment, and messaging channels used in disputes.

Join.To.IT builds the marketplace software. The payment provider handles regulated money movement. We do not operate as a bank or payment institution.

Why custom software

Why marketplace operators build instead of forcing a store

A hosted store assumes one merchant owns inventory and takes the payment. Marketplace rules around who can sell, how fees work, and when funds release are commercial decisions. Custom software is warranted when those rules are the product.

Sellers are not staff

Onboarding, permissions, and suspensions need their own lifecycle, not a second admin login on a brand store.

Fees are the business model

Commission, listing, and promotional fees rarely fit a single discount field in a standard checkout.

Payouts create liability

Holds, splits, and failed transfers need an audit trail operators can explain to sellers.

Trust work is daily operations

Moderation queues and disputes are not a plugin afterthought; they are how the marketplace stays usable.

One catalogue, many owners

Search, ranking, and policy have to work when no single brand owns every SKU.

Our development process

From marketplace model to a working platform

The same Join.To.IT delivery process, applied to seller onboarding, commissions, payouts, and trust workflows.

01

Business analysis

Map how sellers apply, list, fulfil, get paid, and raise disputes today, including who currently decides each exception.

02

Solution design

Define the data model for sellers, listings, orders, fees, and payouts, plus the payment provider and identity integrations.

03

UI/UX design

Design seller, buyer, and operator interfaces so moderation queues and statements are first-class, not admin leftovers.

04

Development

Build onboarding and listing control first, then commissions, split payouts, and dispute handling in releases operators can run.

05

Quality assurance

Test approval paths, fee calculations, payout holds, and dispute deadlines with realistic multi-seller order scenarios.

06

Launch & support

Launch with a limited seller cohort, then open onboarding and tune moderation rules and payout calendars.

FAQ

Marketplace development questions

Practical answers for marketplace founders, operators, and product leads.

How much does custom marketplace development cost?
Scope follows seller onboarding, commission complexity, and whether you hold funds until delivery. A seller portal with listing review is a contained build; adding split payouts, risk queues, and dispute cases is larger. We price after mapping parties in a transaction, not per listing or per seller seat.
Is this the same as a DTC online store?
No. A DTC store has one brand, one catalogue, and one merchant of record. A marketplace has many sellers, listing control, commissions, split payouts, and trust and safety work. If you sell only your own products, the DTC brands page is the better starting point.
Can you handle commissions and split payouts?
Yes. We model fees by category, seller tier, or fulfilment method and integrate a payment provider that supports marketplace splits and holds. Join.To.IT builds the software and reconciliation views. The provider moves the money. We are not a payment institution.
How do you approach trust and safety?
We build queues, evidence capture, and decision records for the people who already do this work. AI can screen listings and summarise disputes, but suspension and payout holds stay with your operators. We do not claim we will eliminate fraud.
Should we replace Shopify or another hosted platform?
Not by default. If Shopify already serves a single brand well, keep it. Marketplace mechanics — multi-seller onboarding, commissions, and split payouts — usually need a dedicated platform or a custom layer. We recommend replacement only when the storefront cannot represent more than one seller honestly.
How long before the first sellers can transact?
A first release typically covers apply, list, buy, and a simple payout path for a limited cohort. Moderation depth and dispute automation follow once that path is stable. Timeline depends on identity checks, payment provider setup, and how much of fulfilment you operate versus sellers.
